Lake water levels change due to many reasons
such as climate change, tectonism, erosions, and use in field irrigation. Especially,
monitoring of climate change indicators and lake water levels due to the effect
of global warming is important for the sustainability of lakes. With climate
change and the decrease in water, the lake area is also shrinking. This
shrinkage (water withdrawal) in the lake area reaches the bottom of the lakes
and the depth of the lake changes. In this study, it is aimed to determine how
the decreasing water level in the lake affects the depth of the lake and
whether there is a relationship between them. For this purpose, Beyşehir Lake,
located in the inner parts of Turkey, was chosen as the study area. Firstly,
the change in the water level of Beyşehir Lake for the years 2015-2020 was
determined from the satellite altimeter data. Then, Satellite Derived
Bathymetry values were obtained by processing Sentinel-2 high resolution multi
spectral satellite images in the same time period with the European Space
Agency's SNAP software. According to the analysis, a decrease of 1.32 meters
was determined in the lake water, and also the average depth of the lake
decreased by about 5 meters. A high correlation of 92% was found between the
lake level decrease and the average lake depth between the years 2015-2022.
