Özet

In this study, an investigation of the effects of innovative crush plugs on composite circular tubes subjected to axial quasi-static crushing is presented. The composite tube specimens in the study are manufactured from Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) plain weave woven fabric prepregs. The crushing characteristics of composite tubes are investigated both experimentally and numerically using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations for axial crushing tests. After FE model is validated with experimental results, the effect of the suggested novel plugs are investigated numerically using the FE models. Suggested novel plug geometries includes two crushing zone curves and channels that steers the crushed tube through during crushing and can lead to more fragmentation behavior and higher energy absorption characteristics along with progressive crushing. FEM simulations are carried out in Abaqus/Explicit software with stacked-shell approach, using cohesive zone method (CZM) to model delamination and using a built-in subroutine for continuum damage mechanics (CDM) of fabric composites to model intralaminar damage.
