Wire electrodischarge machining (WEDM) is a vital nontraditional
machining method when die/mould production is considered. The selection of
optimum machining parameters affects the die/mould life time which is one of
the major outputs in today’s manufacturing operation. In this experimental study,
a well-known tool steel (K390) has been machined by WEDM and the influences
of pulse on and pulse off on surface roughness have been examined. Three different
surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rq and Rz) were measured for determination
of their effects on surface quality. It was obtained that the die lifetime
could be increased by reducing surface roughness if WEDM parameters were
selected appropriately.
