Abstract

Rapid growth in polymer technologies causes similar growth in industries where polymeric materials are used as in dentistry. Although biocompatibility is not a concern for industrial polymers, it becomes very important for polymeric materials used in dentistry. Soft and hard tissues in the oral area are composite structures containing natural polymeric components. The use of polymers and polymeric composites in intraoral therapies is very common and also novel materials are constantly presented for clinical use. Methacrylate-based polymeric dental composites are the most popular materials used for the treatment of dental caries in hard tissues. Moreover, various natural polymers such as collagen and hyaluronic acid as natural polymers and polylactic acid, and polyglycolic acid as synthetic polymers can be used in root canal treatment of soft tissues such as pulp. In this section, polymers used in dentistry will be classified according to clinical procedures and current studies will be transferred.
