As a part of the Golden Horn rehabilitation project, sea bottom sediments dredged from the Golden Horn were pumped via a pipeline to a confined land disposal site in Alibeyköy. The dredged slurry which is stored in the disposal site is a clayey, silty alluvial soil having high water content and low shear strength. Since, high water content soils such as sea bottom sediments dredged from the Golden Horn exhibit large deformations during self weight consolidation and/or under surcharge loads, the prediction of settlements is not possible with classical consolidation analysis. Due to the studies performed in the recent twenty years, several methods were developed on this subject which yield quite good results (Townsend and McVay 1990, Abu Hejleh, vd. 1996, Toorman 1996, Fox ve Berles 1997). In this study, in order to gain experience for the future analysis that will be implemented to investigate the field behavior of Golden Horn disposals and to confirm the parameters that will be used during the analysis. A cylindrical model tank which was constructed for this purpose was filled with the dredged slurry by increasing its water content and left for self weight consolidation. The measured values obtained during the experiments executed in the model test tank were compared with the results of the numerical analysis. During the numerical analysis , CS2 model which was developed by Fox and Barles (1997) was used. This model is capable of analyzing consolidation behavior of soil layers exhibiting large deformations. The material properties which are needed during the numerical analysis were obtained from the seepage Induced Consolidation tests (Berilgen, 2002). The results of the numerical analysis are observed to be in good agreement with the measurements obtained during the model tests.
