The transforming spatial structure of İstanbul's historic shipyards: An investigation in terms of conservation, use, and sustainability

Özet

İstanbul possesses a rich cultural fabric shaped by industrial heritage sites that have survived from the Ottoman period to the present day. Among these, shipyards are structures reflecting the city's urban history and maritime culture. The Haliç Shipyards and the İstinye Shipyard have largely lost their original industrial functions but have preserved their architectural identity. This study evaluates these shipyards within the framework of UNESCO's Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach and ICOMOS sustainability principles. The conservation of historic shipyards signifies the preservation of physical structures, production culture, maritime heritage, and collective memory. These sites are threatened by deterioration, prolonged disuse, loss of identity, and unplanned transformation projects. Drawing upon exemplary UNESCO World Heritage sites, the study discusses strategies that support cultural sustainability, accessibility, and spatial and environmental integrity. Based on field observations, interviews, literature, and comparative analyses, the study argues for the adaptive reuse of İstanbul's historic shipyards while preserving architectural authenticity, industrial continuity, and collective memory. By analyzing the Haliç and İstinye shipyards through the same SDG–HUL matrix, the study demonstrates that the sustainability of conservation depends less on site scale or centrality than on transformation models compatible with industrial continuity, collective memory, and SDG-oriented conservation principles.
