Energy need is rapidly growing. Increasing population in
big cities causes energy outages because of faults or system insufficiency in
peak time. Smart grid allows to distribution grid operator (DGO) a flexibility.
This flexibility relies on smart grid infrastructure and energy storage system
(ESS). ESS has a number of benefits to DGO. ESS can smoothen renewable energy
generation, reduce peak power and provide support during outages. With ESS
installation, more renewable energy can be used, more benefit can be gained by
both DGO and customer, energy losses can be decreased, and also distribution
grid upgrades can be defer to a late years. Additionally, energy arbitrage can
make benefits for DGO. Although ESS has benefits, its cost is high and DGO
needs motivation to use it. In this study, assessment strategy of ESS location
and capacity is done according to these benefits. Besides these benefits,
different ESS types are compared by each other. The main goal of this study is
to motivate DGO to install ESS in appropriate place and size. An example radial
distribution grid is modelled. All busses that capable for ESS allocation are
simulated by PSS Sincal software. All costs calculated as net present value.
Results are given in details.
