Subtitle Translation Training Based on Translation and Interpreting-Oriented Language Learning and Teaching (TILLT)

Özet

Translation and Interpreting-Oriented Language Learning and Teaching (TILLT) is an approach to language learning and teaching, which involves the integration of translation and interpreting activities in the classroom. The fundamental assumption of TILLT is that language teaching and learning in Translation and Interpreting (TI) programs should be different from general language teaching and learning therefore language courses should enable students to develop language competence that will allow them to participate in subsequent translation/ interpreting courses successfully, contribute to the development of translation and interpreting competence and prepare them for the workplace (Schmidhofer, 2022). This study presents the results of a pilot subtitling workshop in the framework of TILLT approach, conducted with first-year undergraduate students of the department of French Translation and Interpreting at Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey. The aim of the study was to find out whether subtitling could represent an effective tool in the context of TILT (RQ1) and to explore the contribution of a TILLT-based subtitling workshop to the enhancement of positive emotions such as enjoyment and to the reduction of negative emotions such as boredom (RQ2). To collect data, the Turkish validated version (Proietti Ergün & Ersöz Demirdağ, 2023) of the Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (Botes et al., 2021) and the Boredom Scale (Li et al., 2021) were used. The group of 14 participants who took place in the workshop were compared to the 19 participants in the control group for Enjoyment: t(31) = 19.05, p <.001 and for Boredom: t(31) = -6.53, p <.001. . The result revealed that students who participated to the TILLT-based subtitle translation training enhanced their enjoyment of the class and decreased the level of boredom or discomfort.
