Historical Peninsula, which is the most important historical and touristic center of Turkey and one of the busiest trade and commerce centers of Istanbul, is seriously affected from noise. The area covers almost all types of urban zones such as dwelling, trade, recreation, health and education besides the architectural heritage of three great civilizations. In the process of harmonization with EU, studies related to noise pollution have to be started immediately in Turkey, strategic noise maps and action plans have to be prepared. A research project which covers the assessment of the noise environment of the Historical Peninsula, noise mappings of its selected areas and an action plan proposal, is carried on by the aim of creating an example to the requirements of the Directive 2002/49/EC. The team of the project is constituted of the experts from architectural acoustics, urban conservation and planning, architectural conservation and restoration fields. In order to be able to assess the noise environment and the requirements specific to the area, statistical data on urban functional zones, indoor and outdoor usage types and population densities have to be taken into account. The studies and the first results of the project will be presented in this paper.
