Evaluation of Different Household Types Using a MILP-Based Home Energy Management System for Post-Disaster Energy Resilience

Disaster-induced power outages can leave households without grid supply for extended durations, threatening both energy-dependent services and occupants' ability to sustain normal living conditions. To address this challenge, this study proposes a discomfort-aware resilient home energy management system (HEMS) for a single residential unit equipped with rooftop photovoltaics (PV) and a vehicle-to-home (V2H) capable electric vehicle (EV). The proposed algorithm jointly manages rooftop PV generation, V2H-capable EV charging/discharging, and load-level activation while prioritizing household services through a discomfort-oriented objective. Different household types are evaluated within the proposed HEMS framework to examine its robustness under varying residential conditions. Seasonal analysis is also carried out under varying solar irradiance levels to examine the effect of PV availability. The numerical results show that the normalized well-being remains above 56% in all scenarios and rises to nearly 85% under high irradiance conditions. Finally, the results reveal that the benefits of increased solar irradiance are not uniform across household types. As solar irradiance increases from medium to high, lowerdemand households benefit less due to their relatively lower consumption, with corresponding enhancements of 5.4%, 20.4%, and 21.4% for Households A, B, and C, respectively.
