In the present work, EPD has been used for processing several oxide and non-oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). The oxide-oxide ceramic composite chosen was a mullite matrix reinforced with mullite fibres (Nextel(TM) 720). The non-oxide ceramic system produced was a SiC fibre (Nicalon(R)) reinforced SiC matrix composite. The successful application of the EPD technique for manufacturing model 3-D metal fibre reinforced cordierite matrix composites of tubular shape is also demonstrated. The EPD process parameters in terms of applied voltage, deposition time, pH and concentration of the suspensions were optimised for successful composite fabrication. The design of suitable EPD cells for fabricating composites of both planar and tubular shapes was carefully considered. The overall result of the experimental investigations confirmed the suitability of the EPD technique for manufacturing CMCs.
