Özet

In this study, a qualitative design was employed to explore primary mathematics teachers’ perspectives toward technology use in their classrooms. In order to have in-dept data, six primary mathematics teachers from three different primary schools in Istanbul, were interviewed. Prior to the interview, the current curriculum including unit and lesson plans of 6th, 7th and 8th grade mathematics was examined and the technology usage at these levels was revealed. Results have indicated that mathematics teachers are using technology especially prior to their lessons. Majority of teachers believe in that using technology has benefits in mathematics education. The boundaries were stated as dense curriculum, technical problems, insufficient in-service trainings, and SBS (Seviye Belirleme Sinavi - an achievement test for 6th to 8th grade primary students) exam. Their solutions were, having more training or academic support on technology usage particularly in new topics of the curriculum, maintaining more technical support, and having computer labs available for mathematics courses. Discussion of the results and implications for future research on technology usage as a cognitive tool are presented.
