The study concentrates on determining whether prior notification for students at middle school level will contribute students to; 1) the ability to match the representations on the map and the entities on the earth, 2) the ability to create a route, 3) the ability to interpret the colors used in maps. When the application results were analyzed; regarding two skills, there was no significant difference between the students who were informed beforehand and those who were not. This may be evaluated as informing beforehand about the topographical map or the principal details of the study area did not contribute to the student's map skills in terms of the first two skills. Students informed beforehand were more successful in third skill. However, the first and third skills complement each other, and there is no explanation in the text for the colors used in the map. Besides, map drawing skills of secondary school students were measured. When the application results were examined according to various cartographic criteria, the examination indicates that the number of maps classified as good was few and did not increase regarding the age. This situation requires giving more importance for map education in secondary schools.
