Biography

Prof. Dr. Metin Gençten received his BSc degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Science at Anadolu University in 2010. He completed his MSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry at the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences of the same university in 2013 and 2017, respectively. He began his academic career in 2010 as a research assistant and worked at Anadolu University and Ordu University. In 2018, he joined the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Yıldız Technical University as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and Full Professor in 2024, continuing his academic activities in the same department. Between November 2020 and February 2024, he also served as the department's vice chair.

Prof. Gençten is the founder of the Gençten Research Group and carries out his research in the Advanced Materials Technologies Laboratory for Energy Storage Systems (ENDEP-LAB), which he also leads.

Research Interests
His research mainly focuses on energy storage systems, including Li/Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, lead-acid batteries, and redox flow batteries; battery recycling; advanced material technologies; nanomaterials; metal oxides and sulfides; graphene-based materials; phosphorene; molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂); electrochemistry; materials characterization; conducting polymers; and two-dimensional materials. He particularly emphasizes the integration of 2D materials into next-generation energy storage systems and aims to develop sustainable and high-performance devices. He has significant experience in the production of coin cells and pouch cells, targeting scalable applications. Additionally, he actively conducts research on the integration of battery and industrial waste into new energy storage systems through recycling strategies, underlining the importance of sustainability.

Projects and Patents
Prof. Gençten has participated in 8 TÜBİTAK projects, serving as principal investigator in 4 of them. He has also led 13 university-supported projects and contributed as a researcher in 9. In the context of university-industry collaborations, he has acted as principal investigator in 2 projects and researcher in 5. He has submitted 24 national patent applications, 14 of which have been officially granted.

He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles published in reputable international journals. As of May 2, 2025, his citation metrics are as follows:

He has supervised 5 PhD and 10 MSc students to graduation and currently advises 6 PhD and 8 MSc students.

Awards and Personal Life

Prof. Dr. Gençten, who ranked first in both his department and faculty during his undergraduate studies, has received numerous awards from national and international scientific organizations. He was honored with the prestigious GEBİP (Outstanding Young Scientist) Award by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) in 2023, and in 2025, he was awarded the “Scientist of the Year – Young Scientist” Award by the Science Heroes Association. He is married and is the father of two daughters.
